I was very surprised to learn about a 43 year old Mark Scott alleged attack on a lesbian couple in front of an elementary school in Oshawa (1). I always thought that even the most homophobic rednecks, apart from hating each other, they also hold lesbians in high-esteem.

But even women don’t always display solidarity. Some women have deeply held beliefs about how things should be done. For example, the breastfeed in public movement has hit a major, stubborn (mile)stone. The owner of AquaCenter, Ellie Karkouti, herself pregnant in the 17th week, forbade a mother (Cinira Longuinho) from breastfeeding in the swimming pool claiming concern for the fetus. She even hired a security firm in bullet-proof vests to enforce her rules (2).

The Ontario Human Rights Commission says breastfeeding women can't be prohibited from feeding their babies in public, or ordered to move to areas considered more "discreet." But the Ministry of Health sets rules that ban food and drink around pools, says Karkouti, and if breastfeeding is allowed, bottles should also be allowed.

If the previous story may be a bit fun (this is after all, a blog that looks at the lighter side of serious stuff), the next one is anything but. It’s about a mother (Serena Ball) who is being bullied by people she cannot fight. She lives on social assistance in an implicitly unsafe public housing unit and is requesting to be moved elsewhere (3).
