Only a couple of days ago we were reporting on a coffee shop closed after a student took a photo of a mouse munching on a cheese roll. Today we learn that Cora Pizza was closed after dead rats and fresh rad droppings were found on the premises.

CBC publishes an informative and somehow strange interview with Dr. Howard Shapiro, Toronto’s associate medical officer.

Toronto Public Health shut down the pizzeria — located near Spadina Avenue and Harbord Street — on Monday, saying the owners failed to prevent "gross unsanitary conditions."

The risk of rodent contamination "to any one particular person, I think, is small," said Dr. Howard Shapiro, Toronto's associate medical officer of health.

"But if it's an ongoing issue … there's a concern with the mice contaminating the food with an organism that might cause a diarrheal illness — maybe something like salmonella or campylobacter that might be in some of the refuse that's in and around the area," he told CBC News.

Cora has already drawn the attention of Toronto Public Health twice this year. In June, an inspector gave the restaurant a "conditional pass" after uncovering unsanitary conditions there.

The restaurant was also cited in March for having rodents and other unsanitary conditions.

Restaurants that are found to have committed repeat health violations are being held accountable for their numerous failures, Shapiro insisted.

"If there is a record of repeat violations … the fines that can be issued against somebody will increase. These can be in the thousands or sometimes tens of thousands of dollars. That can be, I think, a substantial deterrent to repeating." (…)

Health inspectors close about 40 eating establishments every year. About half the closures are related to rodent complaints, said Shapiro.

“I don’t know why the stories have come to light at this particular time, but the reports in the media are not correlated with increases in rodent infestations in local restaurants.”

Toronto Star even publishes a photo of the place:

Hi everybody my name is Restaurant Buster. I am going to bust Cora Pizza. So Cora Pizza was shut down in December 2009. I am quite sure it has nothing to do with the fact that to this day, the directors of Cora pizza treat their employees like crap when same uses hot water, soap and paper towels to clean their hands. That costs money. Pizza plates and pizza bags also costs money. To this day, Cora Pizza is rummaging through the garbage and picking out used pizza plates and bags to put back into stock. The cleanest of the used pizza plates are reissued to the customers who buy pizza by the slice at the front counter. The dirtiest of the dirty plates are used in the bottom of the pizza boxes for take out pizzas. After all, no one is going to notice anyway. What a bunch of filthy pigs the directors of Cora Pizza are. Too cheap to spend money on soap and paper towel - oh yes I know, you can see the paper towel and the soap - that is only to be used when the inspector is there. Too cheap to spend money on pizza plates and pizza bags. BUT!!!!!!!!!! The directors of Cora Pizza have the money to go to Cuba and Italy. Hmmmmmmm. Oh well, I guess it is okay that someone can get very ill and possibly die from eating this cross contaminated food. What does Cora Pizza care? After all for every paper plate reused from the garbage the directors save 5 cents. For every pizza bag Cora Pizza pulls from the garbage they save 25 cents. Hey, they save even more money by buying rotting and moldy vegetables to cut up without or, rarely washing them first. Remember, Cora Pizza advertises the freshest. Just remember that the next time you want to get a fresh slice of pizza from Cora Pizza. Never go first thing in the morning. They sell all of the old pizza slices from the day before first. Hell, I have even witnessed one of the directors retrieve a piece of old pizza from the garbage, clean off the slice and put it back up front for sale. I was pissed and it caused a big fight and I left in disgust. Why did one of the directors sell a slice of pizza from the garbage? Simple. It costs money. What is important is that the directors of Cora Pizza get to go on holiday, and you get to have your health and or life endangered. Isn't that a criminal offence? Trust me, as a matter of fact as of this posting date and time, you will find the used pizza plates stored in the kitchen area of the pizza shop between the large and medium size pizza boxes. Take out anyone?
